JASTECA Pioneered 5S in Sri Lanka
JASTECA has become synonymous with 5S in Sri Lanka. The first ever 5S public seminar was organized by JASTECA. It was conducted by late Dr. Taiki Akimoto in 1994 and after his demise JASTECA commenced the JASTECA 5S Competition culminating in the JASTECA 5S Awards. The competition has been conducted consecutively since then. Today 'JASTECA Awards' is known as the Annual National Competition for 5S in Sri Lanka.
JASTECA 5S Awards recognizes Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Merit Awards. The winners are selected through a panel of Evaluation in which the highest points received will be the Award winners accordingly under Large, Small and Medium categories.
JASTECA 5S Awards recognizes an overall winner for the year. The winner is disclosed according to the Panel of Evaluation has received with the highest points in the implementation of 5S practices. Merit awards are given to those business enterprises which have exhibited commendable levels of 5S practices. There are also sector awards presented to the best practitioners in Manufacturing, Trade, Service, and Plantations etc.
JASTECA every year conducts Training programs on 5S by its specially trained AOTS. The benchmarking standards have risen over the years and now "Advanced 5S" or "Super 5S" as it is often called the norm to follow.
A large number of applications were received during the past years (over 100) for the Taiki Akimoto" 5S Competition from both the Public & Private Sector Organisations. Categories for the competition are Manufacturing, Trade and Services, Banking, Apparel & Telecommunication.
The Process of the 5S Competition
As the applications are called from the potential organizations to participate in the 5S Competition, an awareness programme on the Implementation of the 5S Concept is conducted as a Public Seminar. Subsequently, an Orientation Program is conducted for all those enterprises which apply for the 5S Competition with a view to explaining the benchmarking standards applicable in conducting the "Taiki Akimoto" 5S Competition as explained in the "5S Concept Manual" published by JASTECA.

The "Taiki Akimoto" 5S Competition criteria contains 06 elements regarding the 5S Concept, which have been sub-divided to 51 activities while the 06 elements regarding the Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) have been sub-divided to 27 activities, making it a total of 78 activities as the total curriculum for the Taiki Akimoto 5S Competition. All these details are explained in the above Text Book.
Any Institution desirous of implementing 5S may follow the 5S Manual, published by JASTECA, which is available for sale at the JASTECA.
We, the Japan Sri Lanka Technical & Cultural Association, (JASTECA) are the sole Alumni Association of The Association for Overseas Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Partnerships (AOTS), Japan in Sri Lanka. Our Association is formed of returned trainees from scholarship programs offered by AOTS. Thus, the returned, enlightened trainees are eligible to become members of Japan Sri Lanka Technical & Cultural Association (JASTECA).
